Philosophy
The bedside management of a patient designated as an organ donor is a complex process balancing maximum utilization of all organs and respectfulness of the donor family in their time of loss. Many different factors influence and compose the approach to managing the patient who has designated themselves an organ donor or through their loved one's consent. Time is of the essence to preserve function of all potential organs against the physiologic derangement of brain death and other unforeseen challenges and obstacles in the intensive care unit.
Through direct communication with the coordinator and review of all data in real-time, an MMCM Consulting physician will discuss and manage the donor with the OPO coordinator as it is not always possible to have physician directed care available at all hospitals across the country at all times. Although protocols can certainly help deliver appropriate care, personal attention to detail and approaching each donor individually will undoubtedly increase organ donation. As with any patient in the intensive care unit, new problems arise very quickly demanding prompt attention and intervention. Delay in response can be devastating and result in loss of opportunity for donation. As a team, we will be supported by evidence based medicine protocols addressing all aspect of care thus delivering a standard of care approach similar to other critically ill patients. Our ultimate goal and responsibility is to maximize the number of organs donated per organ donor every time.
